Connor and Hudson on SNL; let’s try to block out war

I’m going to try to stop watching or even reading the news. It’s too heartbreaking, this latest madness. Each day, the man and the nation descend further into deepening darkness. Did you see the video Trump posted after the Olympics of him playing hockey in a suit, scoring goals and punching Canadian players in the face? Is this not psychosis? From a man who holds the nuclear codes?

People are critiquing Carney for saying he supports this vile idiot war. I’m sure he does not but is making nice in an attempt to deflect Trump’s hatred for this country. We’ll see.

Went to hear the always sharp Linda McQuaig speak about her new book on billionaires, how they’ve been given a free pass to destroy the planet for their personal enrichment. Could not agree more. She may be coming soon to a city near you; watch for her. And yesterday I interviewed my friend Ron Hume for a profile for our local paper, The Bridge. The profile I wrote about Ramy Elaasar of Alexandria Printing in this month’s issue. Page 15, FYI.   https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Y8SoXa7yNjWSSfT1hHD8_zqdPjxHnhpW/view

Ron is a former businessman, now a writer aged 92 who began writing at 86 and has published four books. The one he’s working on now is called Rigged: How the economy rewards the few and fails the many, a fierce, eloquent critique of the current unchecked state of capitalism. Would meet with Linda’s approval.

Of course I must mention Saturday Night Live. For the first time in many years I stayed up to 11.30 to watch but went to bed at midnight, will see the rest later. Heated Rivalry‘s adorable Connor Storrie was the guest host, and his equally adorable co-star Hudson Williams made a surprise appearance in a skating skit, to extended screams from the audience. Beatlemania reborn, like I said, brightness in our dark lives.

I was at Indigo the other day buying Watership Down that I hope to read to the boys, and there were piles of the novel of Heated Rivalry for sale by the cash. Reader, I bought one.

A new genre for me: gay hockey porn. Only of course it’s not porn or even about hockey, it’s about young men immersed in a macho culture learning to trust, be vulnerable, and love, while also enjoying lots of enthusiastic sex. Rachel Reid, who’s married with two children, must have gay male friends who tell her everything. Good for her.

Today, across town to watch Ben play hockey again. My own small young superstar.
